In this piece, Moses Oludele Idowu x-rays the mystery of the Two Trees and explains why contemporary Christianity in Nigeria is weak.
"If the foundation be destroyed what shall the righteous do".

"The axe is laid to the root of the tree. Any tree. which bringeth
not forth good fruit shall be cut down and thrown to the fire"
- Matthew 3:10
DECLARATION
I) I declare that I am a citizen of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria, by birth.
ii)) I declare that I am a
teacher of the Word, a prophet and an apostle of God sent to bear
witness to the Truth and to declare His judgment against what He has not
commissioned nor ordained.
Iii) I declare that I am also a writer, researcher and
author in furtherance of my calling as in ii) above.
v) I declare that to the best of my knowledge there is no
law that makes it a crime to undertake research in Nigeria or on Nigeria.
V) I declare that there is no law which makes it a crime to
make public the result of your research.
In view of the above I am standing within the ambit of the
Law and on spiritual legal grounds in the disclosure made hereunder. I therefore warn you the mighty entities of
darkness: beware what you do with me because I am standing on legal grounds.
"Abdon I stand on
the King's Highway, take heed what you do with me" - Christian (John
Bunyan, Pilgrim Progress)
INTRODUCTION
This message is heavy; coming with the axe and the sword; it
is one with authority and with judgment. The Law is with both blessings and
curses (See Deut.28) Jesus preached declaring both blessings and woes on cities
that refused to accept His message. St. Francis sent out his preachers with
blessings and curses. When God's servant, Joseph Ayo Babalola was raised he was
told that those towns and individuals who received the apostolic message that
he was sent to herald will be as green as the fresh palm fronds and those who
refused that commission will wither like the dry tree. Every apostolic
commission goes with blessings and curses. We have a right to doubt a
commission that claims to be apostolic yet carries no repercussions if ignored
or disobeyed.
Today, judgment will fall.
BEGINNING…
This message begins with history, relevant history. Until
you understand this history, you will not understand why Christianity in this
nation is weak. There is a Yoruba Proverb which says, “Amukun, eru re wo, o ni “Oke l’enwo, e o wo’le”"; literally
meaning "Lame man, why is the load on your head bent?” He says, “Don't
look up, see my legs”.
Thus to understand why Nigerian Christianity is presently in
its current state you need to know certain history, history as it has never
been told.
In the course of this discourse, I have to mention names of
individuals, towns, cities, nations etc and also certain historical facts not
to denigrate those cities or towns or tribes but to show why we are where we
are. I mean no harm.
There are three aspects of this message namely: a) The
History, b) The Intrusion and Reception of Christianity and c) The Birth of Effete
Religion in Nigeria and Counter Reaction. Then Judgment and Conclusion.
HISTORY: THE COMING OF CHRISTIANITY
TO NIGERIA
Now let us begin this journey. We shall go to the nation of
Britain and to the 18th century to the Evangelical revival. Britain and America
were visited by a mighty revival in the 18th century under the auspices of
Methodism; Wesley brothers and Whitefield were the agents of this revival. The effect of it was that it pricked British
national conscience and for once, many people saw slavery as evil.
Two, the Industrial Revolution which occurred around the
time of this same revival led to inventions of steam engine and other
labour-saving devices so that really, the British no longer needed slaves as
before.
Three, the abolition of slavery by an Act of Parliament in
1807 criminalized and penalized slavery or slave-owning in all British isles
meaning that traders and business men had to seek alternative genuine
businesses outside of slave trading.
All these contributed to the rise of Missionary Movements
and the evangelization of Nigeria. Thus, the British aim as missionaries or as
traders was not totally altruistic, there was the element of self-love. This is
the first factor to note.
John Wesley died in 1793 but the revival continued.
Whitefield and Charles Wesley died before, though younger than John. After
Wesley's death, the Methodists divided into three: the Wesleyan Methodists, the
Calvinist Methodists and the Evangelicals in the Church of England. The last
group remained in the Church of England, Anglican Communion. It is this last
group that interests us. Henry Venn with 24 others in 1799 started the Church
Missionary Society ( CMS) - made up of
16 clergymen and 9 businessmen. Venn had listened to Wesley when he was young,
his father being a friend and follower of Wesley. One of these was Wilberforce,
who would be used to stop the slave trade, another admirer of Wesley. It was this society who sent Townsend to Nigeria
in 1841 for missions.
Notice this fact: there were businessmen and there were
clergymen. One group interested in souls of men, another interested in business
and making money; one group wanted to build the kingdom of God another the
kingdom of the world; one group wanted God another wanted gold. The "
Bible and the Plough" thus became a metaphor for the missions of both
Anglican church and British interests. This mixture is the second factor while
Christianity, mission Christianity, was compromised from the beginning and
explains why the Nigerian Christianity has not, till this day, been able to
divorce personal interests from Kingdom interests.
From this foundation, we now proceed to Nigeria: first
Badagry and later Abeokuta, to see the Mystery of the Two Trees and the other
factors why Nigerian Christianity was weak from the very foundation.
MYSTERY OF THE TWO TREES
There were two trees in the Garden of Eden, one for Life and
the other for bondage and death. There are two trees in Nigerian Christianity:
one, original, the other, a counterfeit.
Most people have
never heard of the name Thomas Birch Freeman but they have heard of Henry
Townsend. Freeman was sent by the Methodist Missionary Society and he was
already in Badagry doing his work by or before 1841. He had gathered the first
group of re-captives, ex-slaves and others and began to teach them the Word of
God. Their first gathering took place not inside a church or building or hall,
for there was none then. Their first gathering was in the open space UNDER A
TREE. Thus, the first ever gathering in this nation where men called the Name
of Jesus, took place under a TREE. This is the first tree. Take note of this.
TOWNSEND ARRIVES
Thus, when later in 1841, Townsend arrives in Badagry, he
met Freeman already working and gathered a group of people. Not wanting to
compete with Freeman, he proceeded to Abeokuta. Here we see the OTHER TREE. But
before then there is a history we must know.
THE YORUBA NATION AND ANARCHY
The circumstances under which Christianity came must be
understood. In the 18th and19th centuries, the Yoruba nation was in turmoil and
anarchy which eventually resulted in Civil Wars. It began with wars and
mercantilism; trying to catch slaves to sell. But the real trouble began with
the treachery of Afonja, a war general who refused the orders of the then
Alaafin Aole and went to side with the Fulani's. This treachery forced the then
Alaafin to pronounce a curse on the Yoruba that they will never again be united
as he broke the calabash before committing suicide. This apart, by 1821 the
Civil War commenced in Yoruba land as each tribe faced each other. Only the
Ijebus were untouched.
It began in 1821 with Ife-Owu war. Owu was an Egba
settlement around the area where Ikire now is. It was the war that scattered
this Egba settlement and splintered them all around Yoruba land today. Egbas
badly suffered from this anarchy, just like their twin brother, the Ijeshas,
while the Oyos with a tested fighting force and army, foraged the entire nation
to assert the hegemony of the Oyo. Ibadan, then known as "Eba Odan",
was an Egba town but when war came, the Egbas were uprooted not being able to
stand the tested artillery of the Oyos.
Thus, Eba Odan became a war camp for Oyo soldiers and a new town emerged known
as Ibadan today.
As mentioned earlier,
Egbas suffered during this era. Thus, they left from all the places where they
once lived to find a new settlement to prevent total annihilation. It was in
1830 they came to their present site, Abeokuta. meaning “Under the Rock”. Led by
their leader, Sodeke, they came to the present site to hide and build a new
community.
This is why Olumo Rock plays such a major role in the
cultural history of the Egbas because it represents the symbol of their
collective survival and resistance in the most trying period of Egba history.
The four distinct groups that made the Egba settlement had
developed then - the Ake, Owu, Oke-Ona and Gbagura. But Sodeke was the
recognized leader; an Ake man.
In their new settlement, they still found no rest. The Dahomeans
still fought them and terrorised them. The Ijebus would have nothing to do with
them and the Oyo army was still hostile and threatening, looking for slaves.
Eko was a no-go area because of the Eguns, aborigines. Ajisafe in his “History
of Abeokuta” noted: "..In Abeokuta of those days there were fears within
and fights without." (p.106)
It was at this period that something happened which would
have serious repercussions on the history of Christianity and even the quality
of Christianity. This is what we now want to see, because this aspect has been
ignored by our scholars for long; yet it is the crux. Troubled on all sides the
leader of the Egbas, Sodeke, did the normal thing most Yoruba of that era would
have done.
ENTER IFA, THE ORACULAR DEITY
Ifa, the Yoruba oracular deity of divination plays a major
role in Yoruba traditional and occult systems. No king can be enthroned in
Yoruba land without first a consultation with this demonic and occultic system.
It is the livewire of Yoruba traditional religion.
Thus, Sodeke called the chief priests to consult the deity
on what to do and the next step to take to save the Egbas from ruination. It is
here the story becomes interesting. They consulted Ifa and this demonic medium
told them that their problem would soon be solved. That very soon a white man
is coming and white men will soon come to them at Abeokuta with blessings and
they should embrace them and what they bring. That it is the white men and what
they bring that would save them. Now, understand that the devil too, knows the
future, at least a good part of it.
This point is important to understand how and why the Egbas
received Christianity: how they received it and with what spirit they received
it; and how this laid a foundation for the rest of Yoruba land and the kind of
Christianity that has resulted today. Thus the Egbas were waiting for the white
man - or men - which this prophetess of Satan said was/were coming.
TOWNSEND ARRIVES ABEOKUTA, 1842
Townsend proceeded to Abeokuta to first see for himself.
Sodeke was still alive and all the Egba chiefs who witnessed the Ifa
consultations earlier. As soon as they saw Henry Townsend, they recognized the
white man and received him courteously. They were enthusiastic to have him. He
asked for a piece of land, they gave him and even much more.
Townsend was baffled. He was surprised at the eagerness and
the favour. He should have been more cautious. He should have asked questions.
Not all favours and blessings come from God. How would people support and give
to a gospel they had not even heard of or understood? Townsend should have
pondered.
But the Egbas, as we have seen in this narrative, were not
really interested in Christianity or Jesus or God but in their own survival,
advancement and progress. Knowing this fact is crucial to understanding the
Mystery of the Second Tree and the root of Effete Christianity in Nigeria - a
religion without God and the Cross,
which people embrace just to get jobs, blessings, houses, prosperity,
kill their enemies, protect themselves plus ‘heaven at last’. (Now why, should
Satan also not want to be a Christian on such terms?)
The American Army in its war manual for soldiers warns:
"If an attack is too smooth be careful, you might be walking into an ambush".
Townsend should have read that. If a thing looks too good, it might probably be
fake. Thus Townsend returned to Britain to mobilize with joy for God having
buttered his bread. But had He?
He returned much later with a party -including a young
native and re-captive, Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who would play such a crucial
role in laying the foundation for real Apostolic Christianity with his
wonderful translation of the Bible to Yoruba and other languages;, the greatest
gift that came out of Mission Christianity.
On August 3, 1846, Townsend with Crowther and Marsh arrived
Abeokuta finally to settle to missionary work. Here again the Egbas consulted
IFA.
Let me quote Ajisafe:
"On the appearance of the missionaries the Egba chiefs consulted the Ifa
Oracle again. The chief priests enheartened the Egba chiefs that the advent of
the Europeans would prove lucrative to the Egba nation. Here the Egba people
were asked to offer as sacrifice, eight white pigeons (lekeleke), which must be
caught alive, and on performing certain ceremonies with them, the birds must be
let loose. The people were assured that whereon these birds might perch, there
the Egba kingdom would be extended to. The sacrifice was offered… " (
p.86). Do you know the meaning of that?
Thus as Townsend and Crowther with their party were
labouring to plant the Gospel, the Egbas too were labouring to hijack it for
their own national purpose. As they tried to build the Kingdom of God, the
Egbas too were struggling to build their own kingdom using Christianity and the
perks of the white man and his civilization.
They gave the missionaries everything they needed. Sodeke
had died before Townsend returned but he left words that they should
accommodate Christians. Thus this is the Root of the Second Tree.
In summary the Egbas, collectively accepted Christianity ON THEIR OWN TERMS not on
CHRISTIANITY'S TERMS. They were not interested in Jesus or the Cross or
holiness but in themselves, their prosperity, survival and victory over their
enemies just as most of those who go by the name Christians today. Thus the
Egbas received Christianity not because the story or gospel of Christianity
suited them or pleased them, neither because of any conviction for sins but by
the encouragement of Ifa. With due respect to those first Egba natives and even
the Egbas today, what they did, knowingly or unwittingly, introduced another
spirit, an Antichrist spirit into Christianity - which has not been exorcised
till today but which will receive the Judgment of the Cross. This is the Root
of Counterfeit Christianity - Effete Christianity - that has become the face of
modern Christianity.
A WORD OF WARNING
However, what I have said so far is true but not the whole
story. To be fair to the Egbas, not all of them received Christianity on this
format. There were some who grew and understood the real terms of Christianity
and ACCEPTED CHRISTIANITY BASED ON THOSE TERMS. In other words, many Egbas, as
individuals, understood what the terms were and received them. Thus True
Christianity also emerged and genuine Christians also emerged from the Egba
cosmos. Let no one misconstrue what I say. Some of the most outstanding
Christians of the early days were Egbas - the Ransome-Kutis, Arobiodus,
Gansallos, etc. They fought great odds to take authentic Christianity to other
places like Ota, the Ijebus etc. Read of Kuti (Fela’s great grandfather)’s
battles with witches at Ota to establish Christianity. It was the Egbas who
evangelised Ijebus through missionaries from where the Aladura movement began. So
Egbas produced real Christians too. However, the official version, the
majority, received Christianity for profit motive and for its utilitarian
values.
THE TREE AND ITS FRUITS
Thus from EGBA land, Christianity expanded, meaning
different things to different people. This is the Tree. The tree has two
branches, one good the other evil; one righteous and holy, the other occultic,
demonic and Antichrist. But they are both from the same root of EGBA
Christianity.
Soon prosperity came. Egba land became a marvel to the rest
of the Yoruba. Soon other Yoruba tribes began to ask for Christianity: the
Ijesha, Oyo, Ibadan, Iseyin, Ife, etc. They wanted not God or Jesus but
prosperity and gain which Christianity and the white civilization brought. In
short, religion for gain, effete Christianity. This was how a counterfeit
religion spread over Yoruba land.
Like the Egbas, they still consulted Ifa, sacrificed to their idols and still embraced
Christianity - a religion only in form without content or substance. This is
the root of effete Christianity in Yoruba land and Nigeria. It is the evil part
in the Tree of Good and Evil. This is why today, many do not see any conflict
between being in a cult and still pastoring, preaching or professing
Christianity.
Thus there were two Trees - the one, a planting of God and
the other, the planting of Satan. From the same Yoruba milieu.
THE TREES AND THEIR FRUITS
The two trees began to grow within the same space. For a
long time, most people never understood what Christianity really required or
demanded. It was the false version of Christianity that was growing. By the
time the Egbas finally understood what Christianity was about, real
Christianity - monogamy, renunciation of idol worship, etc, majority,
especially the chiefs and the nobility, rejected Christianity and even began to
persecute Christians. During the Ifole, they literally drove Christians away
from Egbaland and even confiscated their goods. At that time, the Egbas had
become strong and prosperous and didn't
need the religion or help again to withstand their enemies. For long,
Christianity did not sell among the nobles of Egbaland except the poor, ex
slaves, etc.
It even came to a point one missionary had to join the
Ogboni to get the nobles of Egbaland to become Christians. This again, was the
beginning of trouble. Over the years the two Trees produced their fruits and we
can now see and judge for ourselves.
The first Tree produced the authentic Christianity, the true
Christians who accepted Christianity based on God's terms; not for personal
gain or on their own terms. That Tree produced the, Crowther, Gansallo,
Ransome- Kuti, Braide, Eshinsinade,
Ogunmefuns, Odubanjos, Orekoyas, Orimolades, Sophie Ajayi, Babalola, Babatopes, etc and all the authentic apostolic revivals
from 1912, 1916, 1918 and ultimately 1930 and thereafter. This Tree is the
father of every true believer who worshipped God in spirit and in truth and not
for gain.
The other Tree also has produced its fruits and several.
This is now the face of Christianity in Nigeria. It is popular, rich, powerful
and modern. This was the version that came through the mediation of Ifa Oracle
and as such, it sees nothing with occultism, traditional religion or sacrifices
plus the Bible. Its notable fruits include Rev. Ogunbiyi who in 1944 started
the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity within the Anglican Church and thus laid the
foundation for occultism in the Church which that church still struggles with
till today.
From this Fraternity which came from the Church, would emerge
elements that would go into our public service, judiciary, banking, police to
recreate themselves in their own image. From this Tree would emerge Olusegun
Obasanjo, another Antichrist, who received Christianity on his own terms and
plunged this nation through FESTAC to lay the foundation for the occult revival
that we are now battling in Nigeria. Although a theologian who
"preaches" the Bible, he is also the Balogun and Ebora Owu (Owu
Demon), probably the most occultic chieftaincy title in EGBA traditional religious cosmology. With
this Christianity, this Tree, there is no conflict between consulting Ifa and
going to church. Its philosophy is one leg in the church and another leg in
traditional religion. That is why most Ogboni members go to church. Most Pyrate
Confraternity members are also members of churches.
This Tree also has produced most of the tares we see today -
false gospel, Antichrist gospel, materialism, etc. The woman who opened the
door to familiar spirits in Cherubim and Seraphim and torpedoed that originally
great institution was a product of this Tree. Likewise the " prophet"
who saw monkey and snake in the forest and planted the monstrous gargantuan
occult entity known as the Celestial Cult of the Christless ( CCC), were all product
and fruits of this Tree and from the same Egba cosmos. I understand the
antichrist is trying to unite these tares together perhaps to form one super
church that will pave the way for the Man of Sin or, probably fight the true
Apostolic Revival that is coming. In the meanwhile my people are soundly asleep
unaware that a battle has been declared against them.
This is, in my opinion, the root of the trouble. Today,
judgment will fall.
JUDGMENT
"But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father
hath not planted, shall be rooted up" Matthew 15:13
There are now two strands of Christianity in Nigeria, two
Trees in the Garden. One is the planting of God, the other, the planting of Ifa
and the occult. One is genuine, the other counterfeit.
God has not planted counterfeit, “the enemy has done
this". But Jesus above gave a decree that is eternal: whatever is not
planted by God must be uprooted. That is what will now happen.
I STAND AS A
MESSENGER OF GOD, AN AMBASSADOR OF JESUS CHRIST, AN APOSTLE RAISED TO BEAR
WITNESS TO THE TRUTH...IN THESE LAST DAYS..
I STAND ON THE
PLATFORM OF JESUS CHRIST, TO WHOM ALL POWER IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH HAS BEEN
GIVEN AND I DECLARE. ...
“THOU EVIL TREE,
COUNTERFEIT RELIGION, COUNTERFEIT CHRISTIANITY, PERVERSE OCCULTIC PLANTATION OF
SATAN DESTROYING THE SOULS OF MEN AND DISTORTING THE DESTINY OF A NATION AND
PEOPLES, YOU ARE CURSED...
WITH THE SAME
AUTHORITY WITH WHICH THE LORD CURSED THE FIG TREE IN THE DAYS OF HIS FLESH, I
SAY TODAY: “YOU ARE CURSED”, I CUT OFF YOUR LIFE, I PRONOUNCE TODAY YOUR LIFE
IS DESTROYED. WITHER, DRY UP FROM THE ROOT AND BE UPROOTED...IN THE NAME OF THE
BLESSED LORD JESUS CHRIST AMEN.
I NOW DECLARE THE
ENTHRONEMENT OF TRUE AND APOSTOLIC CHRISTIANITY THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH AND
BREADTH OF NIGERIA. AMEN. IT IS WHAT THE APOSTLES ON EARTH SAY THAT THE
APOSTLES IN HEAVEN AFFIRM... THIS IS WHAT I HAVE SPOKEN, HEAR O HEAVENS, AFFIRM
IT; LET NOT THESE WORDS FALL TO THE GROUND. IN THE NAME OF GOD THE FATHER, GOD
THE SON, AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. AMEN
SPIRITS OF JUST MEN
MADE PERFECT, CHERUBIMS AND SERAPHIMS AROUND THE THRONE, THE ELEMENTS - SUN,
MOON, LIGHT, FIRE, HEAT... ENFORCE THIS DECREE OVER NIGERIA. IT IS DONE. AMEN
AND AMEN”.
